The Toro Rosso STR3 was another single-seater born from the collaboration with Red Bull Technology and raced in the 2008 Formula 1 World Championship. The drivers that year were Sebastian Vettel and Sébastien Bourdais.
The STR3’s track debut came late in the season at the Monaco Grand Prix. In fact, for the first five races, the team ran with the STR2B, an evolution of the previous year’s car. The relative continuity in regulations meant that the 2007 car could be updated according to meet the demands of the 2008 regulations.
The technical sheet
Once again, the Toro Rosso STR3 was powered by the Ferrari 056 engine, a 90 degree 2398 cc V8 with 32 valves. The car featured a composite monocoque, a pushrod suspension – both front and rear – and Bridgestone tyres.
STR3 results
STR3 was one of the most successful single-seaters in the history of the Toro Rosso team. In its first race, it finished in fifth place on the Monte Carlo track in the hands of Sebastian Vettel.
The German managed to make the most of the car and also scored points in the Canadian, German, European and Belgian Grands Prix, before scoring a sensational pole position and victory in the 2008 Italian Grand Prix.
Thanks to the excellent performances of the STR3, Vettel also finished in the points in Singapore, Japan and Brazil and Scuderia Toro Rosso ended the year in sixth position in the Manufacturers’ Championship.
