Scuderia Toro Rosso took part in the 2014 Formula 1 World Championship with the STR9. Designed by James Key and Luca Furbatto, it was driven by a new line-up: Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniil Kvyat.
The technical sheet
The major regulatory innovation of the 2014 F1 World Championship was the introduction of the new hybrid power units: two thermal energy recovery systems (MGU-H) and kinetic (MGU-K) were fitted to a 1600 cc V6 Turbo internal combustion engine. They improved the efficiency of the cars and guaranteed additional power. A V6 Turbo engine supplied by Renault was fitted on the Toro Rosso STR8.
The car’s chassis was made up of composite material, entirely designed and built in the Faenza factory. The STR9’s suspension was pushrod on the front and pullrod on the rear. Calipers, pads and discs were supplied by Brembo, while the new brake-by-wire system was made by Scuderia Toro Rosso.
The transmission was made of aluminium alloy, had eight sequential ratios and was provided by Red Bull Technology.
STR9’s results
Toro Rosso’s drivers for 2014 were Vergne and the novice Kvyat. In the first race in Melbourne, the two STR8s were the only two Renault-powered cars to finish the race, with the Frenchman and the Russian finishing in eighth and ninth positions respectively. The best result of the season was Vergne’s sixth place at the Singapore Grand Prix.
At the end of the championship, Scuderia Toro Rosso was seventh on 30 points.
