MIAMI GP: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW
For the first time since 1959, Formula 1 returns to Florida, for a brand new event, the Miami Grand Prix.
Miami is considered the jewel of the “Sunshine State,” with its Latin-American cultural influences, a thriving artistic scene, beaches and nightlife, not forgetting sport of course. The city hosts the Miami Open Tennis tournament, the National Football League, as well as NASCAR and Indycar races. And now the stage is set for Formula 1.
Miami International Autodrome is the venue for the Grand Prix, just a few kilometres from Downtown. The United States thus holds the record for the most cities to have hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix, with Miami being the eleventh.
The street circuit runs around the famous Hard Rock Stadium, home to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. The promoter came up with 36 different possible layouts before arriving at the definitive version. All the hard work over several years has produced a track that is fast and spectacular, with three long straights each with a DRS zone, where speeds are expected to reach 320 km/h.
The Miami Grand Prix looks like being a great addition to the calendar, bringing together sport and entertainment and it takes place on 8 May 2022.
MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AUTODROME
It’s a street circuit, but its design has all the hallmarks of a permanent facility. Miami International Autodrome runs round the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. The track is fast and smooth, with three DRS zones, but there are also places where drivers have to brake right on the limit, producing some great overtaking moves.
Return to Florida
The inaugural Miami Grand Prix took place in 2022, marking Formula 1’s return to Florida for the first time since 1959, when the race was run at Sebring. Miami is the eleventh American city to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix. The race is now run in Miami Gardens, just a few kilometres from Downtown Miami.
Alongside turns 11 to 13 is the Hard Rock Beach Club where the organisers recreated a beach setting complete with swimming pool and resort-type cabins. There are plenty of events and live music and the party goes on long after the racing has finished.
